Foot pain is a common condition we see as Sports Chiropractors.  Overuse is the most common foot injury we see, followed by traumatic foot injuries like ankle sprains.  Here are some of the risk factors for foot pain:

  • People who are on their feet all day, such as nurses
  • Women are more prone because of high heels
  • Flat feet or excessive pronation
  • High arches
  • Bunions or hammer toes
  • As you age, your risk increases as your feet flatten and the cushion on the bottom of your foot decreases

Here are the most common foot injuries we see:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Inversion ankle sprains
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Knee, hip or back pain stemming from the foot

The most common improper mechanics we see in the foot are:

  • Lack of mobility, like ankle dorsiflexion, inversion or eversion
  • Lack of strength or stability in the foot such as excessive pronation
  • Lack of big toe extension

We also see many foot issues because of improper fitting shoes and/or broken down shoes. Some tips are to:

  • See someone who can look at your feet and gait to ensure you have proper fitting shoes
  • Change your shoes often.
    • If you run regularly you should be changing shoes every 3 months.
    • Walking shoes should be changed at least every 6 months

It is also important to know that your foot is your only connection to the ground, and if you have poor foot mechanics, can lead up the chain to knee, hip and back pain!
